By Sophie Cornish POLICE FOOT patrols have been brought in to try and stop youths brawling near the busy Shirley and Marshland Rds intersection. Fifteen youths fought at a bus stop near Burger King about 3pm last week, leaving one in hospital and six facing charges. Burger King Shirley manager Tina Sherma has welcomed the increased police presence. In the past few months there have often been up to 10 or 12 youths loitering nearby smoking and drinking, she said. Mrs Sherma and her staff were threatened when they asked youths to move on. “I went to talk to them (and) they said they were going to chase me to my house and find

out where I live,” she said. Senior Sergeant Stephan McDaniel said the problem can be countered by more policing. Five units were called to the brawl last Monday. The location is a big factor in causing problems. “The location (the bus stop) has a high volume of youths and foot traffic at that time of the day,” he said. Senior Sergeant McDaniel said the youths fighting last week were not school students as had been previously reported. “It’s not necessarily school kids, it’s young adults that aren’t going to school.” Shirley Vet Clinic employee Christine O’Keefe said it’s not the first time something like this has happened. • Turn to page 5

Tuesday September 19 2017 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

WHAT AN election it’s going to be on Saturday night. The best and potentially the closest in many years, and one which will shape the country’s future for sometime. Star Media, publisher of the Pegasus Post, will be following the election on our website www. star.kiwi and we’ll have reporters out on the street and bringing you latest updates through the afternoon and into the night. The Star on Thursday will also have an in-depth election preview. The polls clearly show people have shifted to voting for either National and Labour and this could spell doom for many smaller party politicians who have made it into Parliament on the back of MMP. Indications are voter turnout will be high and which ever party mobilises its supporters best on Saturday will win. – Barry Clarke

In Brief GYM SCHOOL LEASE The Coastal-Burwood Community Board will recommend the city council grant a new lease to the Christchurch School of Gymnastics at QE II Park. Its current home at QE II was built in 1996 and was badly damaged in the earthquakes. Rebuilding on the current site is not a viable option, according to geotechnical and engineering investigations. The school’s preference is to relocate to a site in QE II Park where more favourable land conditions exist.

CoastalBurwood Community Board Chairwoman Kim Money says the hoop will be removed and re-installed with a cherry picker, due to it’s tall height. Garden theft breaks hearts Kelly Dugan is the chief executive and founder of SmileDial, a charity which helps families who have a child with an ongoing medical condition or disability Support is provided by SmileDial to families through financial aid, advice, counselling and other activities, which aim to put a ‘smile on people’s dial’. Recently, one of the projects, SmileDial’s different type of perfect sensory garden, was hit by thieves for the third time, who stole trees which were planted by families. I want to change the world, I want to make life easier for everyone, and I want to make sure everybody has what they need, especially families raising children with special needs. I decided six years ago that I would try and provide the support to others that I was so desperate for six years ago, when I became the parent to a child who is a different type of perfect. I decided I would not allow anyone else to feel as alone, scared and overwhelmed as I did (we did). So I started a charity called

SmileDial to be there when others aren’t. Recently, the media has discussed the theft of trees from a sensory garden our charity built in 2016. Like everything else, I have the choice of how I will deal with this. Yes, there is anger and frustration, but also there is a sense of defiance. I choose to look at the positives, the people who have offered to help, the people who have worked

to replace the trees and the many people who stand with me in defiance. We will not let a few idiots ruin something amazing, something that was created with love for those who are often forgotten. Why should I spend any more of my energy focusing on the negative actions of a few and let them destroy something amazing? Something built by many for a few, something created to provide a special place for all children and also those people who no longer carry their children in their arms but always in their hearts. I will not talk or write about those who bring negativity to the garden, but rather I will celebrate those who helped create it and those people who fill the gaps left by the trees with love.

Readers respond to the Pegasus Post article about there being no justification for the New Brighton police station to be open on Saturdays Paula Rountree – It is certainly frustrating when you want to report something that requires you to fill out a form at a police station, or you want to drop something off (found item), especially when you work “office hours” yourself. Opening Saturday mornings would be very helpful. Jen Shortley – But if it’s open and available for the general public when they need it, then they might actually report crime, which means National’s claims about the lowest crime rates wouldn’t be valid. Far easier to ask people to go all the way into the station in town (which they won’t bother doing for minor stuff) so stats look good, right? Safer communities together lol. Tatia Buckingham – I can see both sides of this. It’s hard for the police since . . . the police funding under National has been cut and has made their job so much harder so adding more hours would need funding. If they aren’t going to have it open every day, then maybe it could be just a shift

of hours so that it is ‘manned’ at the times stats say are most needed. For example, man it on Fridays and Saturdays and close it Sunday and Monday or Monday and Tuesday. Same amount of hours just in different periods of time. The most high activity times? Don’t live out there so don’t really know first-hand, but was just my first thought. Peter Maguire – Saturday is the ideal day for the public to report minor crimes, drop off lost property, firearms inquiries and so many more services the police provide at a local police station. Your usual Monday-Friday, nine to five worker would benefit from a Saturday without the need to travel into central and find a car park. I’m sure there are many that would rather keep or throw away lost property, than traipse into central.

CONCERN: Youths often loiter near Burger King Shirley.

SLIM CHANCE: The New Brighton police station is unlikely to open on Saturdays.

Nicolas Christopher Pegg – There is no justification for not having this station manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week – look at the crime statistics. Kieran Frazer – To protect and serve . . . but not on Saturdays. Chrissi Tukaki – The beatings and burglaries and criminal activities occur in the east after 4pm Gavin Simôn – Police stations should be attended over night and after hours when all the crime usually occurs.

Went in once more and got told to come back tomorrow as the staff person had to take a statement so had to close. Noted an issue that community policing could sort – closed. Same issue and person the next week – still closed. If you can’t report to the eastside police station, then there’s no wonder the stats say it’s not worth opening John Walker – No justification for the station to be open What they mean is, that there is no money to pay for it to be open on weekends.

Luke Boyce – Lol, I went

Benny Fitz – Interesting term justification. Arguably the fact that crime is still being committed justifies a stronger presence. Do the crimes need to get significantly more violent or costly before police feel there is justification? Stephen Dickinson – The NB police station is a joke. Every time I’ve needed it, it’s been closed. Someone smashed my car in a parking lot, mid-day, like a year ago (and) was told I need to go to the police station for some reason I can’t remember, but NB was closed so had to find a way into town with no car.

More police in bid to stop street fights • From page 1 “There have been issues over the years with school kids fighting down the alleyway here, it’s certainly not the first time it’s happened,” she said. Ms O’Keefe walked past who she believed to be the instigators at lunchtime last Monday and noticed them drinking. “They were just starting to act a bit strange and intimidating then. Then at about 3pm we saw them chase a boy onto the bus and I think that’s when the bus driver must have called (the

police) to ask for someone to come down. About half an hour later it all kicked off,” she said. Ms O’Keefe said she has previously felt intimidated by the crowds which often congregate outside Burger King Shirley. “If you walk past a group of them, they all watch, and you do feel intimidated.” Other nearby businesses, including Z Shirley, Shirley Medical Centre and Lumino: The Dentists Shirley, did not want to comment on the issue.

News Flying fox may be removed THE CONTROVERSIAL noisy flying fox at Muka Park in the Prestons North sub-division may be removed. The Coastal-Burwood Community Board will recommend at its meeting on October 2 that the city council remove the flying fox. After failing to comply with District Plan noise limits, the flying fox mechanism was disbanded. Following this, 488 people signed a petition for it to stay. The board then spent $15,000 trialling a quieter flying fox cable and pulley mechanism. However, it still did not comply with most noise limits in the area following testing in June. The noise tests indicated the flying fox was within the acceptable noise limit for daytime use, but there was a marginal level of compliance due to there being a noticeable “squeak” noise. Now the board is set to recommend it be removed and moved to another park being developed in the area. Parks being considered for the flying fox include Kahu Kiwi Park and the Prestons Park sub-division.

East impressed with QE II City councillors visit complex building site By Sophie Cornish CITY COUNCILLOR David East has given progress at the new QE II site his tick of approval. And the Coastal-Burwood Community Board member has vowed to be the first to jump in the pool when it reopens. Cr East was one of three community board members who visited the site last Monday. The $36.5 million complex, scheduled to open in May, will include a 25m lap pool, a 25m learn-to-swim pool, recreation pools, a hydro-slide and a fitness centre. Cr East was surprised by the size of the complex, after some people in the community criticised it for being “underwhelming”. There had previously been a call for the pool to be 50m. “Long-term, we certainly have the ability to do it, but it is not in the city council’s plans to go near there in the short-term,” Cr East said. “Once you are inside, it’s a lot

this activity.” Fellow city councillor and community board member Glenn Livingstone and board chairwoman Kim Money also visited the site.

A FORMER pupil is giving back to New Brighton Catholic school in the form of a bilingual picture and colouring book. Jessica Hanson, 17, created a picture book as a part of an assessment for her business studies class at Papanui High School, where they were required to create a product to sell. On Friday, Jessica presented her picture book to two classrooms at New Brighton Catholic School, where she was a pupil for seven years. The picture book about a kitten has colouring-in sketches as well as the option to read in Te Reo Maori on the back of the pages. “I wanted to help try and

encourage it (Te Reo Maori) because there is not enough people that can speak it in New Zealand,” she said. Giving back to the school was important for Jessica. “They did a lot for me and I want to give back to the community.” Following the earthquakes, Jessica’s family faced hardship. “My family experienced quite a tough time because we were in the red zone and they (New Brighton Catholic School) did everything they could to help out.” Jessica hopes to pursue writing as a hobby and wants to get involved in business management when she leaves school.

Don’t fight fire unless you’re sure to succeed

Beach clean-up on this weekend

GUTTED: This three-storey house will have to be demolished after a fire ripped through it. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN Modern furniture, made of plastics, foams and nylon, provides a huge reserve of fuel, allowing much faster fire growth than was normal 50 years ago. Using the word fuel is very appropriate because all of those materials originate in oil. And burn accordingly. Anywhere you stay, home, motel, cabin or hotel room, ensure

there is smoke detection. If there’s heavy smoke the cleanest air will be at the lowest point. Get down, get low and get out. Don’t try to fight the fire unless you’re absolutely sure you will succeed. Get out, get your family out, shut doors as you leave and phone 111 from a safe place.

By Sophie Cornish THE NEW Brighton Beach clean-up will happen for the second year in a row on Sunday. The event will take place between 10am and noon and is run by organiser Ariana Wilkins. Mrs Wilkins is a volunteer who organised the event last year because of her love for the environment. “I just wanted to do something community minded and I’m really passionate about the environment so it was a win-win,” Mrs Wilkins said. Last year about 400 people attended the event. This year the Facebook event has attracted interest from more

than 1000 people. City council will help to remove the rubbish and supply gloves and rubbish bags. A sausage sizzle and face painting will be at the event, along with spot prizes donated by local businesses such as Grassroots Yoga & Health, Pier Peoples, Z Energy, The Turf and One Good Horse Parklands, Sadhana Surf and House of Creativity, To Cherish Photography by Shae, Cove Body, North Beach Coffee Shed, Salt on The Pier, The Pod and The Burger Joint. Another clean-up took place in January this year and was run by Sustainable Coastlines in conjunction with Corona and New Zealand band, Fly My Pretties.

By Mark Thomas – specialist fire investigator I WENT to the fire on Clifton Hill, in Sumner, which recently destroyed most of a home. There were a few things there that are worth mentioning. Firstly, the occupants were in an unfamiliar house and once smoke began to restrict visibility it was fortunate that one of the group had familiarised himself with the route to the back door and was able to herd most of his family in the right direction. Secondly, and knowing human nature, understandably, the group leader tried to put the fire out. It was too advanced at this stage and all he managed was to receive very painful burns. He only evacuated the house when the smoke was too thick to breathe. He very nearly didn’t make it. I was asked later by media how the fire grew so large so quickly. There was nothing unusual about the fire growth here.

JOB DONE: The Shirley Spartans after finishing third at the South Island tournament.

Shirley Spartans win spot at nationals Shirley Boys’ High School basketball coach Scott Howell evaluates his team’s performance at the South Island tournament which booked them a spot at nationals in Palmerston North next month OUR SENIOR A team – the Shirley Spartans – travelled to Dunedin to compete in the zone 4 South Island qualifying tournament. Our top six finish at this tournament has allowed us to attend the secondary schools national tournament in Palmerston North in October. Our first game on day one was against a solid Nayland College team, and we had a good win 76-59. Our second game of the day was against a young Kaiapoi High School team. Our experience and depth led to a one-sided 106-42 win. Day two had us facing off against the two strongest teams in our pool. Coming up against Canterbury champions Cashmere High in the first game

of the day was always going to be tough. The team put up a solid fight and showed some heart in the first half, but Cashmere proved too strong in the second half and the final score was 53-93 to Cashmere. The second game of the day against Otago Boys’ High was do-or-die for us. If we lost we would lose our chance to go to nationals. Otago came out strong at the start of the game and were leading by nine at the end of the first quarter. Luckily for us, over the next three quarters we played some of the best basketball we had played all season. After leading comfortably during the last quarter, we had a few scares as the Otago guards hit a barrage of three-pointers, but luckily we showed composure and finished the game off,

eventually winning 106-99. Sean Kelly played his best game of the tournament and led from the front for the entire 40min. He scored an impressive 36 points. He had strong support in scoring from our trio of big bodies – Joel Jeffrey (22pts), Josh Thomson (14pts) and Loyal Patelesio (10pts). This game was easily our best of the tournament. On day three, we finished off the last game of pool play by comfortably beating St Thomas’ 96-56. This was another game were everyone played good minutes and all 11 players contributed on the score sheet. Our quarter-final match-up later in the day was against the No 1 seed from pool A – Rangiora High. This game was important because, if we won, we were guaranteed a spot at nationals. The final score was a hard fought 77-60 win to Shirley. Our semi-final match-up had us playing one of the tournament favourites in Christ’s College. The boys came into this game with

Hagley Senior College

a lot of belief and were leading 32-30 at the end of half-time. Unfortunately, we ran out of steam in the second half and the big minutes played by our key boys caught up with us. Silly mistakes and a lot of missed shots, combined with a lift in intensity by Christ’s in the second half, led to a one-sided second half. After leading at half-time we went down 45-70. Our last game of the tournament was a play-off for third and fourth against Waimea College. We desperately wanted to come third and came out strong in this game. The boys didn’t let up the whole game and for the third time in the tournament, all 11 players contributed on the score sheet. The game turned into a runaway win for Shirley and the final score of 91-47 reflected this. It was a successful tournament for the Shirley Spartans. Everyone involved was pleased with our third place finish in the

South Island. Now the boys look ahead to nationals. This will be a great experience for the entire team and should give them an idea of where we are ranked amongst the top 24 teams in the country. A big thank you to Nat Connell who put a lot of time and effort into the team over the year. Special thanks also to Russell Stocks, our teacher in charge of basketball, who was team manager and worked hard to get us into the tournament and cooked the team some delicious meals. Thanks as well to all the parents and family members who helped out with feeding the boys and supporting them in Dunedin. Wainoni club‘s young boxers take out titles

By Andrew King IZYAH HESP and Daniel Meehan of the Smiling Tigers Boxing Club won titles at the New Zealand Boxing Championships last week. It was an all-Canterbury affair in the cadet under-57kg category with Meehan, 14, squaring off against 12-year-old Hamuera Tainui from the Woolston Boxing Club. Meehan won with a split decision and said he was proud of the way he fought but there was room for improvement. “It was alright, it wasn’t my best fight. I can definitely improve. It was good to get experience and see how it is in different areas,” he said. Aranui’s Hesp, 12, won the cadet under50kg title and said it was a great step towards his dream of an international career. “I was happy to make my family proud. It was a good experience,” he said. Fighters from the Wainoni-based Smiling Tigers Boxing Club had a solid showing at the event, which ran from Monday to Friday last week, with a number of others just missing out on titles. Sam Burdett-Clark, 29, was runner-up in the under-64kg category, and Jarrod Gear-Ngatai, 16, was runner-up in the under-70kg junior category. Wiremu Herbert, 26, lost in the semifinal of the under-64kg category, and Harry Waters, 24, lost in the semi-final of the under-69kg elite category. Canterbury Boxing Association team manager Holly Sullivan said it was one of the “greenest” teams they have taken to the national championships in quite a while. The Canterbury team were awarded the Malcolm Treston Shield for the most wins at the competition.

New Zealand 18s league trial for Lions’ Sakisi By Andrew King CELEBRATION Lions league player, Daniel Sakisi (left), has been named in the New Zealand Resident 18s team. They will compete in a trial against Taurahere, a team made up of New Zealandborn players currently plying their trade in Australia, on Saturday in Auckland.

Sakisi plays second row/ centre for the Lions. He has also played rugby for Shirley Boys’ High. A New Zealand 18s team will be selected from the match to take on the Australian Schoolboys later this month. The last time a New Zealand 18s fixture took place was in 2015.

Bromley School, the competition began in 2012 when there was a proposed merger of the two schools. For the past four years, Linwood Ave have won every year, except for a draw in 2016. Rugby, netball, football and hockey were played in the competiton this

year and the school that wins the most matches takes out the competition. Linwood Ave sports co-ordinator Colin Hill said the pupils and the school community thoroughly enjoyed the event, especially the pupils who played against their teammates from club sides.

EIGHT HAEATA Community Campus students and one from Marian College were presented with Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards by Mayor Lianne Dalziel on Wednesday. Run by the Joshua Foundation, the awards aim to encourage and motivate young people between the ages of 14-24 to become involved in a balanced programme of voluntary, selfdevelopment activities. There are three award sections – bronze, silver and gold. The voluntary and non-competitive awards have different components, including an expedition and recreational element, learning a skill and community engagement.

There are currently 18,516 young people involved in the award activities in New Zealand, who are assisted by thousands of volunteers. Marian College’s Caitlin Fleming, year 11, who has highfunctioning down syndrome, received a silver award. Caitlin completed a two-day tramp in Springfield, where she experienced river crossings and learnt how to make food on a gas cooker. Community involvement at Burwood Hospital, charity shops and the Step Up Club, an organisation for young children with down syndrome, helped Caitlin take out the award.

Rawiri Waaka, instructor of military studies at Haeata, said the eight students got involved at the school cafe, serving food and running the cash register for their community engagement section. He said the tramping element challenged them the most. About 70-80km were walked by the students. “There’s the tangible stuff, it goes on their CV and it shows prospective employers that during school life they didn’t just take basketball or touch, they did something more extreme like putting a pack on your back during adverse weather and tramping a whole pile of kilometres.”

USE THE RED CROSS ADVANTAGE - COMPREHENSIVE FIRST AID, ESSENTIAL FIRST AID, REVALIDATION OR TAILORED TRAINING TO SUIT yOU AT yOUR PLACE OR OURS.

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

FOCUS ON HEALTH

The Tree of LIFE GO-Advanced New research on Gingko Biloba excites researchers! For decades scientists believed brain damage with age, after a stroke or injury was irreversible and brain neurons could not be repaired. In more recent times, new research has shown that neurons can grow back with the right conditions and that a special extract of Gingko Biloba (EGb-761 or TEBONIN) has been clinically found to assist in this. The implications for stroke recovery are obvious, but researchers also know many of us suffer from undetected “micro-strokes” that over a period of time slowly reduce our cognitive function. TEBONIN is prescribed worldwide as a natural supportive agent for a healthy brain and cognitive function. It supports healthy mental performance, concentration, focus, alertness, motor function and to help with many conditions including tinnitus (ringing and noise in the ears), vertigo and normal balance. TEBONIN improves

micro-circulation and helps the blood flow reach those critical places it needs to get to. It is a potent anti-oxidant and makes the red blood cells more pliable and capillary walls more flexible. TEBONIN is one of the most widely studied and researched herbal products in the world and is the only Ginkgo biloba extract manufactured via a patented multistep extraction process. Each small tablet contains a highly concentrated 50:1 extract to give you a therapeutic clinical dose without having to take a large amount of the herb. Of 25 Gingko biloba products on the market, and tested by a major medical journal, only TEBONIN passed all five of the test requirements. Ten brands didn’t meet any requirements and the rest didn’t pass more than three out of five requirements. TEBONIN is the only Gingko biloba extract shown to activate all areas of the brain and is considered the gold standard in Gingko. TEBONIN has been trusted by millions of consumers worldwide for over 30 years with more than 8,000,000 tablets consumed each day. TEBONIN and further information is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy in New Brighton. PH: 388-5757. We are Always Happy to Help!

Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain good health. Until now most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however, naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process. GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new standards in fish oil as it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids. Studies have shown GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better absorbed, leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs through giving the potential for more health benefits. GO-Advanced Omega-PC is produced from fresh wild deep sea cold water fish using a new advanced and more natural cold extraction process that better preserves the natural nutrient profile found in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP standards and is molecularly distilled to remove any containments, toxins and heavy metals. Further info on this revolutionary new fish oil and its benefits is available from the Natural Health Advisers, Naturopath and Medical Herbalist at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy in New Brighton, phone 388 5757. A child who’s ‘a little different’ Children who are just ‘a little different’ – perhaps they’re clumsy, have difficulty writing or tying shoelaces, or prone to ‘meltdowns’, and struggle to fit in. To interpret and function in the world we need to accurately process information from our environment. Some children’s nervous systems may receive, sort and use information inaccurately (sensory processing) causing them to either under or over reaction to a sensation, or actively seek or avoid a sensation. This may cause distress for the child, family and teachers, as coping with everyday experiences like noisy classrooms, the feel of fabric, or moving in a coordinated way may present huge challenges. It can influence behaviour and interfere with learning, doing everyday activities or simply fitting in. No child is the same, each have their own individual difficulties.
